I wasn't really sure why this video was necessary, since there's already a movie version of the show, but I guess perhaps they thought it was outdated, or wanted to showcase the revival cast ... whatever the reason, we now have a video as well. :-)

Not having seen this revival on stage, it took me a little while to get used to the juxtaposition of the modern costumes/hair/sets, etc, with the time in which the story takes place. Sure, this was an issue with the movie as well, but this seemed more striking to me, when it looked like the disciples had accidentally wandered in from an audition for Rent. I think that overall I found this more distracting than creative. For example, in the song "Superstar", Judas talks about the disadvantages of coming in such a "backward time" - but it's hard to see what he means when everything on stage is so modern.

For this show to work, you really need a strong presence for Jesus, and I think Glenn Carter does a fine job. I must admit, though, that I found Jerome Pradon as Judas more interesting to watch. The rest of the cast play their parts well, but nobody really stood out for me. I think that overall, though I did enjoy the video, I probably prefer the movie version. But it is definitely worth watching, especially if you haven't seen the original movie or the show on stage.
