Based on Shakespeare's Taming of the Shrew

The rocky relationship of Petruchio and Kate in a musical version of Shakespeare's Taming of the Shrew is mirrored backstage by the relationship of the show's stars, who used to be married. Throw in a wannabe star from a nightclub, a gambling chorus boy, and some mobsters who will ensure that the show does go on, and you've got a full evening's entertainment! Read the complete synopsis.

It is generally believed that Shakespeare only wrote a part of Taming of the Shrew, as a play of that name already existed before he is thought to have worked on it. Nobody can be sure which parts he actually wrote, but it is probable that most of Petruchio and Katharina's scenes come from him. The show is in itself a play-within-a-play, but luckily, for clarity's sake, this part has been left out of the musical. :-) Read a bit more about the play or find out more about the history of the musical.

The only recording I have for now is the Broadway revival cast. Take a look at my review of the CD, or listen to a clip from one of my favourite songs.

The show was also recently seen on PBS, and will be released on DVD - read more of my thoughts on this recording.

I would have liked to have seen the Broadway revival, but I did manage to see the London one instead, and enjoyed it very much! I even took with me a friend who had sworn off musical theatre, and she ended up having a great time as well. :-) Read more of my thoughts on that particular performance.

All my favourite actors come from the revival productions - no offence to any of the original cast, just that I'm not familiar with them. :-) Take a look at my thoughts on some of my favourites!
