The original production of The King and I opened at the St. James Theatre in New York on March 29, 1951 and played there until March 20, 1954. There have been three revivals - one at the Uris Theatre from May 2, 1977 to December 30, 1978, one at the Broadway Theatre from January 7 to June 30, 1985, and the most recent one at the Neil Simon Theatre from April 11, 1996 to February 22, 1998. This revival also played at the London Palladium from May 3, 2000 to January 5, 2002.
The show has played, among other places, in Australia, Japan, and throughout Europe. It has been performed countless times in regional productions, and can be seen across the country at any given time. Visit the Rodgers and Hammerstein Organization for more information about producing the show.
