Grease had its world premiere in Chicago on February 5, 1971, and did a national tour before opening on Broadway on February 14, 1972 at the Eden Theatre in New York. The show moved to the Broadhurst, Royale and finally the Majestic Theatre before closing on April 13, 1980. The show was nominated for 7 Tony Awards. The original London production opened on June 26, 1973 at the New London theatre.
A Broadway revival played at the Eugene O'Neill theatre from May 11, 1994 to January 25, 1998. London also had a successful revival, playing at the Dominion and Cambridge theatres from 1993 to 1999.
The show has played in countries around the world, with many well-known TV and music personalities appearing in it. It is also a favourite of regional theatres. It is currently on tour in the UK.
