Watching this movie was probably one of my very first exposures to the world of musicals. You can't get much cooler than John Travolta as Danny, or much hotter than Olivia Newton-John in the final scene. For me, as for many others, the movie *is* the musical, and producers obviously know this, to the point where current productions incorporate many of the changes made for the film.
The main changes to the production are in terms of focus in the plot. The stage show is more of an ensemble show, with lots of secondary characters having solo songs. The film is more focused on Danny and Sandy, with Rizzo and Kenickie as a subplot. Of course, there were a number of songs written specifically for the movie as well, including "Hopelessly Devoted to You", "Sandy", "You're the One That I Want". I learned so much about this film from reading "Frenchy's Scrapbook", a book released to co-incide with the 20th anniversary of the movie, and if you're a fan of the film, I highly recommend it! |
