Concept recording Concept Recording. I heard this after listening to the Broadway cast many, many times, so my view was already slightly coloured. I think that overall the Broadway recording sounds more polished, but whether or not that's a good thing is open to debate. I love having "The Lady's Got Potential" in there (and the lyrics are so good - Tim Rice amazes me!), and the cast is great too, though overall I probably prefer Patti. Just a personal opinion! In any case, I'm glad to own both of them, though I probably listen to the Broadway recording more.
Original Broadway Cast Original American Cast. I really enjoy this recording - if I had to pick a favourite, this would be it. And that probably has something to do with the fact that it's the first one I heard! I love Patti LuPone in this role. She makes Eva so gutsy and full of energy. Mandy Patinkin as Che is also great...he's wonderful at being enraged or sarcastic! I also really like a lot of the orchestrations, especially "Buenos Aires". My favourite song is probably "High Flying, Adored", which both Mandy and Patti do wonderfully. The only big complaint I have is that I don't like the orchestration for "Oh, What a Circus"...it could be a bit more powerful.
Dutch cast recording Dutch cast recording. I wanted this recording mostly because Pia Douwes was playing Eva, and she lived up to all my expectations! You can really hear her develop and change as the story progresses. Jeroen Phaff as Peron and Bill van Dijk as Che are also very good, and I really enjoy Marleen van der Loo's "Another Suitcase". It's not a complete recording, which is unfortunate, but what's here is really good. The language also fits the music well, which is always my main concern with foreign language recordings! If you're an Evita fan, you'll enjoy it.
Movie soundtrack Movie soundtrack. I was scared about this one at first, but I really do like it quite a bit. The music for the Requiem at the beginning is gorgeous. Madonna and Antonio Bandares are both decent, though I think there's no comparison between them and the stage actors. I also like the inclusion of the song "The Lady's Got Potential", and the addition of "You Must Love Me". I don't like a lot of the changed orchestrations, particularly "Buenos Aires" and "On This Night of a Thousand Stars". Jonathan Pryce is great, though I wish he'd REALLY sing a bit more!
