This production was being marketed as a "semi-professional" show, though I'm not really sure what that means. Still, Brenda from work decided to come along with me to check it out.

The first thing that stuck out was the sets, or lack thereof. I have nothing against minimalism, but the backdrops for the show basically consisted of 6 cubicle walls. The costumes weren't a lot better, and the lighting was very basic. Lighting isn't something that I normally notice a lot, I guess generally because it's done so well, so when it's not done well, it really stands out.

Much more disappointing than all of that though was the poor direction. Many of the actors were really doing their best, but they just had been given very little to work with.

However, there were some good things as well! The dancers were very, very good, and their sequences in "Buenos Aires" and "And the Money Kept Rolling In" were highlights of the show. Unfortunately, there were times where they would come on stage and be dancing for no apparent reason. And probably the biggest problem I had with the show overall was Jenny McMurry as Eva. She just didn't have the upper register that the role requires, nor was her acting varied enough throughout the show. She was the only cast member who was wearing a mike, and still seemed to be stretching a lot more than the others.

The rest of the cast was better, especially David Nevin as Che, who was my favourite part of the evening. He has a great voice. Michael Coady was a decent Pern, though I didn't really buy him as a member of the military. And Christian Jeffries as Magaldi had a great voice as well, though again, I didn't believe him as a sex symbol. And, it was great to hear the full score, which I hadn't listened to in a while.

Anyway, I always dislike being really harsh about a show, but I have honestly seen amateur productions that I enjoyed much more, and didn't pay nearly as much for.
