Live DVDThe French musicals seem to be generally well-suited to the DVD format, and this one is no exception. There is relatively little "action" in this show - many of the songs involve the character just singing pretty much directly to the audience. And, to be honest, I think it might get a little boring in person. The show assumes a certain familiarity with the story, and therefore does not show many of the most significant events, but just reaction to them.

However, the DVD allows for shifting camera angles, close-ups on background action, and special effects (like the light radiating from Moses after he has seen the burning bush, or from the 10 Commandments themselves) that add to the overall impact of the show.

The cast on the video is mostly the original Paris cast, and they all look and sound great here. My personal favourites are Ahmed Mouici as Ramses and Lisbet Guldbaek as Bithia. The sets and costumes are also excellent, very impressive. I especially liked the video screens, which added setting and context to several of the scenes. The orchestrations are heavy on the synthesizer, but otherwise quite nice. And the choreography is very well done, though I admit to laughing a little bit the first time the Egyptian guards began to dance. :-) I think my favourite scene might be "Mon Frre" - I really liked the use of the glass dividing the two characters.

The DVD also includes some extras, like videoclips of some of the stand out songs and a "making of" special.

All in all, definitely worth picking up, if just for the sheer spectacle of it all, and the wonderful performances.
