The first musical ever written specifically for television, the show was originally presented in 1957, starring Julie Andrews. At the time, it was the most watched program in TV history. Its success was followed by a transition to the stage, where the show began appearing around the U.S. in 1961. It was re-made for television in 1965, and then again in 1997. The New York City Opera mounted the show in 1993 and again in 1995. Following the 1997 TV version, there was a large-scale national tour, but interestingly, the show has never played on Broadway. Still, in regional theatres across the country, it is presented over 200 times every year!
