A Chorus Line opened on Broadway on October 19, 1975 at the Shubert Theatre, and finally closed there on April 28, 1990, after 6137 performances. Seven years earlier, on September 29, 1983, it had broken the record for the longest-running show in Broadway history.

The original production was nominated for twelve Tony Awards, and won nine of them, including Best Musical, Best Book, Best Score, Best Actress, Best Featured Actor & Actress, Best Director, Best Choreography, and Best Lighting.

A London production opened on July 19, 1976, and productions have also been staged in Puerto Rico, France, Australia, Germany, Sweden, Japan, Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Spain, Austria, Singapore, Netherlands, Switzerland, Italy, Canada, Belgium, Denmark, Norway, South Africa, New Zealand and Hong Kong.

The new Broadway revival opened at the Schoenfeld Theatre in New York on October 5, 2006 and continues to play there.
