![]() | This show is arguably the most successful musical in theatre history. It has played in more than 20 countries, been translated into more than ten languages and been seen by more than 50 million people around the world. It is also the longest-running musical in Broadway history. It is unlikely, to say the least! Lord Lloyd-Webber himself has this to say about this point in his career: "You could hear all the cynics sniggering, thinking Andrew Lloyd Webber had lost his marbles leaving Robert, splitting up from Tim and doing a musical from poems about cats. Well, I proved them wrong, didn't I?" |
The show officially opened in London at the New London Theatre on May 11, 1981 and closed exactly 21 years later on May 11, 2002. On Broadway the show opened at the Winter Garden theatre on October 7, 1982 and closed there on September 10, 2000. Cats continues to tour in North America, and can be seen in many other productions worldwide.
