I am a Camera by John van Druten

A young American writer comes to Berlin just before the rise of Hitler and the Nazi Party. As he struggles to write, the young man finds himself more and more tempted by life at the decadent Kit Kat Klub, and by the club's star attraction, Sally Bowles. Read the complete synopsis to find out what happens.

If you'd like an even more detailed look at what goes on in the show, take a look through the lyrics.

Cabaret is based on the true-life observations of Christopher Isherwood who wrote The Berlin Stories about his experiences in Berlin between 1929 and 1932. Playwright John van Druten turned one of these stories, "Sally Bowles," into the play I Am A Camera, which was produced on Broadway in 1952, and later turned into a film. So far I haven't read any of this source material, but if you're interested, you can read a bit more about the history of the musical, or about the 1972 movie.

I'm almost ashamed to admit that I've only got one recording of this show! I'm not really sure why, since I really enjoy the one I have. Read my review of the CD or listen to a clip from one of my favourite songs.

Volunteer ushering is a brilliant concept. :-) Mostly thanks to that idea, I've seen this show four times, and have really enjoyed it every time! Read more about my various experiences with the show to find out more.

This is a show that doesn't necessarily need great singers, but should definitely have good actors. Here are a few of my favourites that have been in the show.

Once you're done looking around here, check out some of the other fantastic Cabaret sites that are out there.
