![]() | Original Australian Cast. This was my first exposure to the show, and I had some difficulty in following the story based on the songs on the recording, which is not helped by the fact that this is just a highlights recording. Also, I think it's just an intrinsic flaw in shows that use music not written particularly for them, that most of the dramatic developments take place outside the songs. Anyway, the cast is fantastic, and Todd McKenney and Angela Toohey are particularly good. The orchestrations sound a bit too cabaret-ish for my liking. Overall, it has quite a different feel to the Broadway recording. If you're a big fan of the show or of Peter Allen, you will want this one too, but otherwise, I'd suggest just going with the Broadway CD. |
![]() | Original Broadway Cast. Between buying the Australian CD and this one, I had the chance to see the show on stage, which naturally changed my perception of the show. This one contains some different music from what's on the Australian recording, and the orchestrations are more in the Broadway tradition. Of course, the reason to buy this CD can be summed up in two words: Hugh Jackman. While the CD doesn't come close to capturing the essence of his on-stage performance, it's still a great remembrance of it. |
