I was trying to think of a good show to take my boyfriend to when we were in New York for the weekend. He likes comedies, so the dramatical stuff was out. Then I remembered - of course - that he's a big fan of the Muppets, and the choice was obvious! Since I hadn't seen the show myself yet, it made it even better.
The mood is set for this show right off the bat, with the great street set, and the screens on both sides of the stage that assist with the "lessons" of the show. As soon as the opening song started, I had a smile on my face, and stayed that way for most of the evening. It was interesting though to watch the reaction of some of the people sitting around me, who perhaps didn't know what they were getting themselves into. After all, seeing puppets having sex is not something that you can ever be fully prepared for.
I enjoyed the show most in its moments of pure parody (mostly the Sesame Street parodies), and there were plenty of other fun moments as well. The more "down" moments, like Kate's "There's a Fine Line" didn't work quite so well for me. Some of the more upbeat songs also fell a little flat, especially those sung by Natalie Venetia Belcon, who just wasn't really that audible, unfortunately.
Most of the rest of the cast were wonderful, it's truly amazing the way they can give life to the puppets. You honestly find yourself watching the puppet and not the actor, which is great. Barrett Foa as Princeton/Rod was excellent, and I was so excited to get to see Aymee Garcia as Kate! She did a wonderful job as well. And we were most impressed with the puppetering skills of Rick Lyon - no great surprise, I guess, since he helped to create them!
In the end, it was a very enjoyable evening, if not really "fulfilling" in a way that other shows are to me. But if you're looking for something mindless and fun (and don't get offended easily), I would absolutely recommend this.
