This is the first time there's been a DVD released of a performance that I actually attended, so right away this recording was going to be special to me. Even so, I believe that any fan of the show would enjoy this, and even people who are not familiar with it would find it a great introduction to the music.

I won't bother to go over the songs in detail, since you can read all about that in my concert review. There are a few little in-between scenes that I had forgotten about, and I'm looking forward to really familiarizing myself with the pieces of music not heard on the cast recordings. The DVD is an hour and 45 minutes long, which, even with the introductions between songs, should give you some indication of how much extra material is involved.

The cast is wonderful, and the nice close-ups are great for catching some of the facial emotions that are missed from further back.

The quality of the recording overall is excellent. The sound problems that I noticed during the actual performance aren't heard here. And the video quality is wonderful too, with good camera work. It really gives you a very good idea of what it was like to be there that day.

In a perfect world, it would have been nice to have some extras, like interviews with the cast and creative team, and the option for subtitles on the introductory dialogue, but that would have just been icing on the cake - it's a very nice recording as is.

You can buy the video or DVD from the Atlantis Gala Concert site.
