In terms of being an adaptation of the stage show, this version is significantly more successful than the 1982 movie. That being said, I still prefer the earlier one. :-) I don't understand why Disney doesn't focus on shows that don't already have good movie versions out there.
Anyway, there are still a lot of good things about this adaptation! The production numbers are fabulous. Most of the stage numbers are here, as well as some of the songs that were written specifically for the earlier film. The cast is also very good. Audra McDonald is a lovely Grace, and Victor Garber works well as Daddy Warbucks. Alan Cumming and Kristin Chenoweth as Rooster and Lily just filled me with glee. Kathy Bates is good as Miss Hannigan, but the character was really watered-down for this version.
The things I didn't like - well, mostly, it was far too short. There's hardly any dialogue, since they wanted to get all of those songs in there. Warbucks falls under Annie's charms far too quickly. We don't really get to know any of the other orphans. As a result of the lack of character development, the ending seemed contrived. | ![]() |
Overall, it is certainly enjoyable, but not a definitive adaptation of the show. But still, any show that has Alan Cumming, Kathy Bates and Kristin Chenoweth walking down a street singing on primetime TV is okay by me! :-)
