The "Little Orphan Annie" comic strip was created by Harold Gray, and first published in the Chicago Tribune on August 5, 1924. Originally, the comic was meant to be about a boy (named Otto), but luckily it was changed!

Annie was on her own, but that didn't stop her from taking on crooked politicians, gangsters, and even the Nazis. The comic was an adventure strip, and stories sometimes lasted more than a year. Annie was later taken in by "Daddy" Oliver Warbucks, a prototypical capitalist of almost unlimited wealth and influence. He was accompanied by his right-hand men, Punjab and The Asp.

Harold Gray died in 1968, but the comic was revived in 1979 after the success of the Broadway show.
