I had been dying to see this show for years, since I fell in love with the cast recording. The songs are so spot-on - perfect spoofs of the typical boy-band stuff, but with incredibly clever lyrics. So on this trip to New York, we were there on a Monday night, and Altar Boyz is one of the few shows playing, so despite my boyfriend's trepidation, we got front-row tickets.
And the wait was definitely worth it! The show is fantastic. The concert and soul-saver premise really work to get the audience involved in the show, and the dialogue, songs and actors are so earnest that you could almost believe this really was a Christian boy band concert and not an off-Broadway show. Of course, that earnestness also contributes to making it absolutely hysterical. In the end, I don't know if my boyfriend or I ended up laughing harder at a lot of the scenes. :-) As he said to me after the show, to pull off something like that, it needs to be believable. The choreography really helps with that believability, it's just amazing. All five of the guys we saw were fantastic. The singing and dancing are such high quality, and they put out great energy. My favourites were probably Jay Garcia as Juan and Ryan Strand as Abraham, but really, all five were fantastic. Neil Haskell as Luke really had a "Nick from Backstreet Boys" look and vibe about him, which was perfect. And Ryan Ratliff got some of the biggest laughs of the night as Mark, though I was just a teensy-tiny-bit disappointed with "Epiphany" - I had a hard time understanding him on some of the words. Of course, that's my favourite song, so I was probably just being picky. I knew I would love the songs, but the dialogue between songs was even funnier than I expected. I loved the various accounts of the formation of the group, and the stuff with the soul-saver was silly but cute. In the end, it's really all silly and fluff, but it's a very fun evening, and that's really all they were going for. I think it would appeal to anyone - check it out, you'll have a ball. | ![]() |
