A movie version of the novel was released in 1985, starring William Hurt and Raul Julia. Among many other awards, the film was nominated for four Oscars, including Best Picture, and won the Oscar for Best Actor for William Hurt. I haven't seen this movie yet myself, so I don't have much to add! I will definitely put some more thoughts up here once I've seen it.
