The Sound of Music is easily one of the most successful movie musicals of all time. It earned 10 Academy Award nominations, and won 5 of those, including Best Picture. The movie starred Julie Andrews as Maria and Christopher Plummer as the Captain, and for many people, they have become the benchmark against which all others in those roles are measured. Julie Andrews, especially, is inextricably linked with Maria - when people think of The Sound of Music, it is Julie in the hills that comes to mind. There were some pretty large changes for the film in terms of plot and music. The songs "How Can Love Survive," "An Ordinary Couple," "No Way to Stop It" from the Broadway show are all missing, while new songs include "I Have Confidence" and "Something Good". Recent productions of the show have tended to be an amalgamation of the original show with some of the more beloved changes in the movie.

Most recently, the movie has re-appeared in theatres as part of a new experience, the "Sing-a-long" Sound of Music. It has also been released on DVD, with hours of interviews and background footage that is a must-see for any fan.
