Song and Dance is a combination of two Lloyd Webber pieces: first, his Variations on Paganini's Caprice in A minor (1978) and secondly, Tell Me on a Sunday, a song cycle written in 1980.
After the release of a concept album for Tell Me on a Sunday, Song and Dance premiered in London at the Palace Theatre in 1982, where it ran for 781 performances, closing on March 31, 1984. The first act was Tell Me on a Sunday - the second was Variations set to dance, including ballet, tap and jazz. The male dancer is one of the girl's boyfriends, and at the end of the show, they are reunited.
Many changes were made to the show before its Broadway opening on September 18, 1985 at the Royale Theatre, where it played 474 performances, closing on November 8, 1986. The show was nominated for 8 Tony Awards, winning one for Best Actress (Bernadette Peters).
There has also been a US touring company and productions in Germany, Australia, Switzerland, Austria, and Norway. Tell Me on a Sunday returned to London on April 15, 2003 at the Gielgud Theatre, starring Denise Van Outen. It was originally a limited 12-week run, but was extended and ran until February 14, 2004. This production is currently touring the UK, starring Marti Webb.
