How did some slip of a girly boy from communist East Berlin become the internationally ignored song stylist barely standing before you?

The movie version of Hedwig, starring and directed by John Cameron Mitchell, premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on January 19, 2001, where it picked up the Audience Award for best movie, as well as the Director's Award for John Cameron Mitchell.

Filmed in Toronto, the movie remains pretty faithful to the stage version, but with interesting use of animation and flashbacks, cutting between scenes. Now available on DVD, featuring a full-length documentary entitled "Whether You Like It or Not: The Story of Hedwig", deleted scenes, and fascinating director's commentary, I think this movie should be seen by everyone. A lot of people are turned off by the off-the-wall premise, or by the fact that it's a musical, but honestly, it is such an original and insightful piece of work, that I would recommend it to anyone.
